Words in Deep Blue - Cath Crowley
I picked the book because of the back cover , the back cover is unique it does not have a summary but images of books with letters on it.
The book is about love , death and boooooks!!!
Rachel has lost someone she dearly loves and returns back to the city she grew up in. The death of her dear one has changed the quirky and smart Rachel. She does not want to go back to the city grew up in because she will have to face her best friend and her unrequited love, Henry.
Henry works in his dad's bookshop. The customers leave letters in the books which is the specialty of the bookshop. He is blindly in love with Amy and loves only her. He is informed by Lola (Rachel's best friend and his friend too) that Rachel has returned. He is angry since she stopped writing to him but he still goes to the bar where Lola is playing. Amy breaks his heart right before Rachel's arrival is announced.
" There should be a disconnect button you can push when someone leaves: you fucked me over, therefore I no longer love you. I'm not asking for the button to be connected to an ejector seat that removes them from the universe, just one small button that removes them from your heart."
He meets Rachel but the new Rachel is giving him the cold shoulder. Henry is all sloppy as he sees Amy in love with her new boyfriend Greg. He has a battle of words with Greg and it obviously ends with a punch.
Rachel comes over to help him not because she loves him but because he was? is ? her best friend .
Rachel and Henry are stuck together because Rachel has a job in the bookstore. Henry is confused because this version of Rachel is not his best friend . Their journey of books and poetry begin.
"She is my soul mate", I tell her .
"Then I am worried about your soul", she says .
George, Henry's sister who loves to read and is different from everyone in school is in love with the one writing letters to her with a secret name. This person might break her heart or not.
The thing I love about George is that she takes ideas and books and the discussion of those things seriously. "It is the characters, mostly not the world. It's how people are when they've lost everything or when it's dangerous to think for themselves."
So what is amazing in the book?
I love how strong Rachel was , she wasn't one of the sloppy lovers. She did not drool every time she saw Henry. It was amazing how she had the strength to say what she wanted to. It was definitely hard to loose someone she dearly loved but she slowly accepted it. She lost a lot but she still kept doing her best. Her character seemed so real , I could feel her pain.
The book has so much feels (sit with a tissue box) , it makes you cry but it also makes you understand about life and death. I loved how books and letters were talked about. It showed how just one book , just one letter could impact someone altogether. Every reader will connect to this book because it is us who knows the loss and the beauty of books. Also, we don't just love books we live them and their characters too.
Yes, it is a HEA (happily ever after) and has romance too!
