Anne With An E
Drama, Coming of Age
This reimagining of the classic book and film is a coming-of-age story about a young orphan who is seeking love, acceptance and her place in the world. Amybeth McNulty stars as Anne, a 13-year-old who has endured an abusive childhood in orphanages and the homes of strangers. In the late 1890s, Anne is mistakenly sent to live with aging siblings, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who live on Prince Edward Island. Anne, who proves to be uniquely spirited, imaginative and smart, transforms the lives of Marilla, Matthew and everyone else in their small town.
I started out this series after having seen numerous youtubers going crazy over this couple. There were so many beautiful fanmade videos over this that I just HAD to watch them! This series is based on a classic novel called Anne of Green Gables.
This series marks one of the few amazing slow burn romances I’ve seen. Their romance builds up through 3 seasons and thankfully we see them together by the end of the third season, as the series gets cancelled after that. (Fans are outraged and hopefully we get more!)
Set in the 1800’s, Anne with an E is about an orphan girl who is accidentally placed with a family who were actually looking to adopt a boy. After facing some ups and downs they soon grow fond of her and officially welcome her into their family. Therein is birthed - Anne Shirley-Cuthbert.
Anne Shirley Cuthbert is a very multi-layered character. Her past was really painful and heart breaking. She is a fiery red headed girl with a temper and heart. That terrifying past of hers has shaped her into the strong and brave woman she is and has made her mature and smart. She doesn't cower to how things should be but strives to make change. Throughout the series I loved her, grew frustrated with her, cried with her and laughed with her. Her character growth is something beautiful to witness!
On to the hero - Gilbert Blythe. I ADORED him in the first season. My heart ached for a Gilbert with his deep penetrating gaze, soulful looks and a golden heart. He is captivated by Anne from the moment they meet (Hard not to - she’s an enigma). They both have this enemies to lovers relationship in this drama - I love it!
Gilbert hasnt had the easiest time in life either. Like Anne, the struggles in his life have made him more mature than his peers. Throughout the series there were 3 times when my heart completely melted for him. First, towards the end of season 1 where he punches the boy who bullied her and asks him to not mess with her. Second, in season three where he defends Anne when the whole school is against her. And third, his letter! Obviously there were other moments where I loved him as well and that’s every time he is on screen! XD This actor plays the role of Gilbert so well, I found myself wanting a Gilbert in my life too!
Of Course there were some aspects of this series that weren't my favorite. I didn't like how Anne repeatedly boasted her ‘imagination’. Like, we get it, you don't have to tell me that every 2 episodes! Also I didn't love the Shirbert couple (Gilbert + Anne Shirley) in the middle of the third season. Somehow, BOTH of these characters managed to piss me off! It's a three season drama, so I think that's expected though! Not enough to stop me from shipping them as the cutest couple but :p
To wrap up, although I started this series to catch their romance, I was swept off my feet into Anne’s world of burning need for justice and change. The show deals with numerous topics such as racism, sexism, etc.
A fan favorite, this series has stolen the hearts of many! Anne and Gilbert are a childhood romance that is wonderfully portrayed through 3 seasons. I binged all 3 seasons in 4 days so that's saying something!
