Have you seen the cartoon too? I was a huge fan as a kid but for obvious reasons wouldn’t want to watch it now. In some ways, I don’t even think this can be related to the cartoon, a lot is different. So even if you’ve never heard of it, you’re good to go. Because, even though I was a winx fan back in the day, I cannot for the life of me remember anything about it xD
You find its going to be very different and more mature when its set as a ‘fantasy-horror-romance-action’ show rather than a kiddie cartoon. The storyline is mysterious and gripping with enough hotness on screen to keep you coming back for more.
The story is set in a fantasy world where fairies and magic is real. There are 5 fairies who are the crux of the show:
Bloom - Fire fairy (Um, I’m not her biggest fan but also don’t hate her)
Stella - Light fairy (It took me some time to warm up to this one)
Aisha - Water fairy (Initially loved but not so much towards the end)
Terra - Earth fairy (She slowly grew on me, a little irrational at times tho)
Musa - Mind fairy (Tbh I liked the cartoon version better - Techna the fairy of technology.)
I liked them all as a group but as individual characters they sometimes could get on my nerves. Especially Bloom. The whole show basically revolves around people aiding and abetting her. Very not cool.
Some core points that had me invested in the show was the cool use of magic and anticipating the romance between characters. Oh and let’s not forget the mystery xD
We have love interests for a couple of the fairies and I’m sure we’ll have more as seasons evolve. For season 1, we have two main ships - Bloom + Sky, Musa + Sam. Other ships are a bit vague and all over the place so I’m not mentioning them here.
Bloom and Sky are a piece of work and totally dysfunctional. Initially I loved their dynamic but as episodes progressed I honestly shipped Sky with Stella.
The only ship I loved and actually watched the whole show for was Musa + Sam. They were So. Cute. I loved everything about how they met, the awkwardness, the cuteness, the giddiness, everything! I wished we had more angst and screen time with them.
Romance apart, there are still a lot of unanswered questions which I can't wait to watch unfold in the upcoming seasons. I bet there will be more twists, magic and romance in the second season and I'm excited!
Pick this up if you’re looking for an action packed, adventure filled tale set in a fantasy world with a little sprinkling of romance.
