Fair warning before going into this drama: keep a tissue box next to you. I went into this knowing about the ending and making peace with it. What I didn't know was the whole freaking drama would make me a weeping baby. And actually leave me with a smile in the end. Huh, go figure. But don’t worry this drama has a lot of comedy too and OBVIOUSLY a lot of romance. I was hooked to it.
Most people either love this drama or can't stand it - I haven't seen an in between reaction yet.
Kim Shin the Goblin (played by Gong Yoo), has a painful past which we learn about in the first episode. He accidentally happens to live with the Grim reaper and they share a hate-love bromantic relationship. As the drama unfolds, we understand the Goblin’s life over the years and we meet the Goblin’s bride, Ji-Eun –Tak. Eun-Tak has never had an easy life but things seem to get better (or worse) for her after meeting the Goblin. The Goblin and Eun Tak don’t know what the almighty has in store for them. All they know is meeting each other is destiny. The Goblin and Eun Tak begin a journey together not knowing what the future holds ahead of them.
Goblin is a blockbuster for a reason. It's good. Really good. The cinematography, perfect acting and the poignant love story all come together for a beautifully emotional drama. It's got depth and emotions filled to the brim. It makes you feel in that place deep down in your heart. It'll evoke the tears right out of you.
And while all that holds true, this drama is also funny with great chemistry. They balance the grief with some well timed humor! Every single character play their role to a T. And goddamn the plot twists! It actually caught me completely off guard with an open mouthed ‘Daebak’! Hats off to the writers! While some parts may feel a little slow, boring and depressing, once you trudge past those you'll actually quite enjoy it.
Gong Yoo's not my choice of actor but this role was perfect for him. It's like he was made for it. His eyes and expressions portray his profound loneliness and sadness across the screen. Half the feels of this drama lies in his gaze - the brimming love, the piercing sense of grief, the anger, the kindness, the loneliness and the forgiveness.
And holy cow, that grim reaper! *fans self* Who wouldn't love death when it looks like that?! His ever present watery eyes and berry lips make him one damn fine reaper. His past story makes you hate the man he was as a king, but his anguish as a reaper makes you want to pull him in for a tight hug! I love his bromance with Kim Shin. One of the many highlights of this drama!
Another highlight is Kim Shin's nephew - Yoon Deok Hwa. He’s the funny sidekick the duo need to keep things sane. This drama is a complete meal, it has it all!
A downside to the drama- too many plot holes and unanswered questions. Why couldn't she touch the sword the first time if that was her destiny? Was the answer really true love? Will the Goblin remain immortal even though he was relieved from his punishment? What happens when Eun Tak finishes all her 4 lives? *Argggh*
Ahh how could I forget to mention this- the OST!! It's extremely hard to come across a drama with an OST this good! Almost every song has me humming along to it. Really, the only thing that could make this drama better would be if it was more fast paced with a more suspenseful and action filled plotline. Every actor and every entrée in the serial holds importance and plays a role in the unfolding of the suspense. I just wished the last episode had more of the main leads, they DESERVED it. We deserved it too.
At the end of this drama, it left me thinking so much about life and death, grim reapers and goblins and God. I wanted to know if this was my first life and if we could ask the almighty to meet or do certain things we wanted to do in our next life.
