Sassy Go Go (Cheer Up!)

High School Romance, Drama

Set at the elite Sevit High School in Seoul, the drama follows the lives of five students as they attempt to survive in a vicious environment where academic elitism takes place. Kang Yeon-doo (Jung Eun-ji) is the leader of outcast street dance club "Real King", a group of students who band together because of their poor academic performance, whereas Kim Yeol (Lee Won-keun) is the President of "Baek Ho", an elite club composed of students from the top 5 percent. When the two clubs are forcibly merged to create a cheerleading squad, the two put their differences aside for the benefit of their clubs. As they go on with their misadventures, many things happen that result in a strong and unbreakable bond. Cheer Up! is a story that aims at ordinary high school students' misadventures including love, heartbreak, pain and friendship.

Looking for a drama with some cutesy high school romance and school life struggles? Bingo!

This drama is about our female lead Kang Yeon Du (Played by Jung Eun-ji) who is a passionate hip-hop dancer and is fiercely loyal to her friends and people she cares about. She fights for justice for anyone who wrongs her loved ones.

She is a student of Sevit High where grades are the most important thing and something to die for (figuratively speaking obviously). She however ranks in the last percentile. She is the leader of her dance club ‘Real King’. Her charming, helpful and caring personality will definitely win your heart!

Our story starts when Real King is being shut down because its disturbing the adjacent scholarship students club named Baek Ho. The president of this club is our male lead Kim Yeol (Played by Lee Won-keun). He’s a witty hot jerk. There’s a rivalry of sorts that go on between the two clubs until Real King finally closes due to principal orders. Heartbroken, the members try their best to bring back their club.

You’ll definitely connect with some of the dilemmas our actors face during the show. It’s emotional, fun, sweet and empowering. I also loved the character of the cheerleading teacher who enters the drama at a later point. She is so creative with her ways in getting things done! The love story is very cute between the leads and I would give this drama a 4 star if not for that blasted ending (I’m super confused and wailing with frustration!!). It’s a happy ending so don’t worry but it’s just not what I was expecting.

Fun fact? This is my second time re-watching this drama since I first saw it 2 years back. And strangely unlike the first time where I loved it, I am having mixed feelings after re-watching it (a big part because of the ending). It’s happened with other drama’s before too and I think it’s because as you grow with time and your life changes, your perception towards the drama’s change too. Anyhoo! Happy’s only 12 episodes long!
